Title: Aerial Light

material: marble with wooden pedestal

size: 116 (h) x 30 (w) x 30 (d) cm

Sometimes a work evolves from one idea to another. This piece started out as a prototype for a sculptural, lighting design, inspired by the form of a limpet shell.

Over time, I observed how natural daylight passed through the translucent marble, creating a soft, amber glow and the hollow form, turned skywards reminded me of some kind of listening device. The tripod-like pedestal (made for another work) fitted the sculpture and had a nod to astronomical instruments.

This work was purchased for The Irish State Art Collection by The Office of Public Works, Ireland.
